Two millennia ago Romans came to this area. They formed a military camp that later developed into a city called Parentium. Soon it became an administrative and economic centre. Since the day Parentium was founded, it was influenced by many conquerors. Venetians are responsible for the distinctive appearance of Poreč today. Walls and towers, the Istrian council house Canonica, a Romanesque house from 13th century, a Gothic house, Round Tower, and The Great Temple of Neptune are just some of the historical heritage that are worth a visit. Surely, Euphrasian Basilica with a baptistry from 6th century is the most important part of Poreč heritage. In1997, UNESCO listed this Basilica on their World Heritage Site list. Due to its superb geographical position, natural and cultural beauties, tourism is the most important economic sector of Poreč.
